Beyond the ‘Diff

Seeking Sustenance outside Cardiff.

For years I’ve been taking my cheese and chutney sandwiches with me when I go for walks partly in fear of not being able to pick up something on route. I’m doing less high level walking now that I used to so thought I’d see what it was like to risk finding somewhere by chance when I was feeling peckish. So far things have turned out very well. Here’s the places I’ve bumped into.

Maenllwyd Inn, Rudry

The Maenllwyd Inn near Rudry dates back to the 17th century but in recent years has undergone some sympathetic extension work. A group of us had a smashing day out geocaching in the nearby wood, retrieving containers that had been hidden high up in trees with the help of a 10m pole.  After a day of exercise a pint of Glamorgan Beer Cwrw Gorslas tasted wonderful.  I was so adsorbed with the conversation I forgot to take a picture of my steak and ale pie and chips which was also good.

Maenllwyd Inn, Rudry – Jan 2025

Llanover Arms, Pontypridd

I took a group to Pontypridd and visited the Museum before going up to the Common and having a look at the Rocking Stone. On the way back we called into the Llanover Arms and had a lovely pint of Darling Buds beer from the Warwickshire brewery based in Leamington.

Llanover Arms, Pontypridd – Dec 2024

Copper Kettle, Pontypridd

I was having to rethink a group walk I was leading in Pontypridd later this week following the recent flooding and closure of the park.  I came up on the train and walked through the town and then up onto the Common and a look at the Rolling Stone.  On returning to the town I called into the market and had some faggots and chips in the Copper Kettle looking at the second-hand books.

Copper Kettle, Pontypridd – Dec 2024

Crown & Anchor, Lugwardine

Our first weekend away together for over two years!  We had a pleasant evening meal in the middle of Storm Bert.  The Wye Valley Butty Bach was excellent and the service here very friendly.  Nice to see a local pub well used by locals – always a good sign.

Crown and Anchor, Lugwardine – Nov 2024

Cathedral Cafe, Hereford

Spent a pleasant hour trying to identify where we lived on the ancient Mappa Mundi and calculating how big a fine would have been if we had managed to borrow a book from the Chained Library in the 1500s. Storm Bert was raging outside so time for a spot of lunch and some tasty cheese, ham and pickle paninis in the Cathedral Café in the 15th-century Bishop’s Cloister. That’s a half buried flush bracket in the picture in case you are wondering.

Cathedral Cafe, Hereford – Nov 2024

Belle View Tearooms, Newport

A lovely autumn day to be out for a bit of urban exploring and rewarded myself with a chocolate brownie and mint hot chocolate afterwards at the Belle View tearooms.  Sat outside in the watery sunshine and had a lovely chat with a gentleman about local history, science and alike.

Belle View Tearooms, Newport – Nov 2024

Cafe Penuel, Pontypridd

Out doing a recci ahead of taking a group to Pontypridd next month. After visiting the park, museum and historic bridge it was time for a spot of lunch and where better than Pontypridd Market.  Lots of places to choose from but I ended up having some delicious red pepper soup in Café Penuel.

Cafe Panuel, Pontypridd Market – Nov 2024

Caerphilly Golf Club

After telling a group about the adventures of Captain Scott I was treated to some nice fish and chips followed by some apple pie and ice cream.

Caerphilly Golf Club – Nov 2024

Portico Lounge, Abergavenny

The last call for me on a day out with friends sampling some of the hostilities of Abergavenny. The Portico Lounge is part of the same chain as our local Juno Lounge here in Roath.  It was the safe bet of a pint of Guinness in here for me before catching the train home.

Portico Lounge, Abergavenny – Oct 2024

Grofield, Abergavenny

A smashing traditional pub that seems to pride itself on both food quality and real ale.  What’s not to like.  We stopped by here for lunch and a beer on our tour of some Abergavenny hostelries.  I had a fine pint of Adnams Ghost Ship (the cloudiness is my poor picture taking and not the beer!) and an equally fine roast beef dinner.

Grofield, Abergavenny – Oct 2024

Kings Arms, Abergavenny

The Kings Arms is a late sixteenth century coaching inn and a good place to start a day with friends exploring the hostelries of Abergavenny. And what better way to start than with a pint of Wye Valley Butty Bach, one of my favorites.

Kings Arms, Abergavenny – Oct 2024

Greggs, Raglan Services

Did a quick it pit stop here and had a tasty bit of pepperoni pizza.

Greggs, Raglan Services – Oct 2024

Yr Alex, Caernarfon

We were looking to try a new pub in Caernarfon and a quick internet search showed one close to where we were staying. We went in for a quick pint of Bass after coming back from our walk in Snowdonia and so good was it we went back there later for another.

Yr Alex, Caernarfon – Oct 2024

Yr Harbwr, Caernarfon

The Harbour is part of the Whitbread Table Table Group and serves a decent self-service breakfast for £10.99, so good we went there twice.  It offers good views over the harbour down towards the castle walls. It set us up well for a days walking in Snowdonia.

Yr Harbwr, Caernarfon – Oct 2024

The Square Royale, Bargoed

The group I was leading on a walk around Bargoed and Aberbargoed had left to catch the train home and it was time to unwind a bit with a nice beer. The Square Royale has been open since around 2017 and is a modern pub catering for the whole family.  I had a pleasant bottle Fuller’s London Pride.

The Square Royale, Bargoed – Oct 2024

Ricci’s Cafe, Bargoed

Time for a lunch break after walking a group up to Aberbargoed and telling them about ‘The Man Who Never Was’.  The Ricci’s café, which is located on Hanbury Square, was first established in 1909 in Fleur de Lys by Luigi and Clotilde Ricci before moving to Bargoed in 1929. I had a corned beef roll, piece of sponge cake and a coffee.  It revived me no end.

Ricci’s Cafe, Bargoed – Oct 2024

Swan Inn, Tytherington

I made a couple of visits to this smashing country pub over the course of a week as I was geocaching in the area. A pint of Gem was perfect to quench the thirst after a long walk in the surrounding countryside. The Swan was established in 1840 in an old redundant farm building.

Swan Inn, Tytherington – Sep 2024

The Berkeley Bakery

A lovely day spent in and around Berkeley was made even better by calling into the Berkeley Bakery and purchasing a coronation chicken roll and a chocolate caramel brownie.  Had the roll in the grounds of the church before exploring all about Jenner and the last of the brownie was had on the sea defence wall overlooking the power station.  Drove home over the Severn Bridge and witnessed the most remarkable sunset with a large orange sun perfectly positioned between the bridge uprights.

The Berkeley Bakery – Aug 2024

New Continental Cafe, Bargoed

I was busy scouting out the town and attractions for a group walk I was planning here in a couple of weeks.  Today I visited this traditional Italian Café, meaning to return again but I never did although a large number of my group did and highly rated it.  Today I satisfied myself with a latte coffee.

New Continental Cafe, Bargoed – Sep 2024

Clive’s Bakery, Aberbargoed

I love finding these little gems of food outlets.  I had a tuna and sweetcorn baguette and a piece of carrot cake and went to eat it in the war memorial garden and look for the plaques to Glyndwr Michael, the Man Who Never Was.

Clive’s Bakery, Aberbargoed – Sep 2024

Picture House, Ebbw Vale

After having a look at the Gwent Archives and the Ebbw Vale Works Museum it was time to head up the funicular and find some sustenance.  We headed into the busy Picture House for some sustenance of a good pint of Doom Bar and a burger and chips.  The building was purpose built in 1970 as a supermarket, this building stands on the site of the Astoria cinema. Built in 1940, the picture house is recalled in the name of this Wetherspoon pub.

Picture House, Ebbw Vale – Sep 2024

Fireside Lounge, Bargoed

I came to scout out a walk in Aberbargoed so after doing that I walked across to Bargoed where it was pretty quiet being a Sunday but I did find the Fireside Café open and doing a good trade.  I had a simple bacon roll and I must say it was jolly nice as was the mug of tea.

Fireside Lounge, Bargoed – Aug 2024

Boar’s Head, Berkeley

Six hours of geocaching on a circular walk up to Sharpness and back had left me with a bit of a thirst which was nicely quenched in the Boar’s Head with a pint of Green King IPA.  Not normally my favourite but today it hit the spot just fine. Looks like I may have come here just in time as according to the news article I’ve just read there are plans to convert it into new homes.

Boar’s Head, Berkeley – Aug 2024

Fox and Hounds, Blackmill

I’d been for a lovely walk up on Bryn-y-Wrach and built up a good thirst in the sunny weather. The beer pumps had no labels but luckily for me one was live and served a Glamorgan Brewery bitter though I’m not sure which one.  Never mind it tasted fine.

Fox and Hounds, Blackmill – Aug 2024

8-2-8, Sully

I was out hunting down some geocaches in the Sully area when I walked past this convenience store and happened to spot a hot food counter.  I popped in and ordered three vegetable somosas and went out to find another geocache whilst they were cooking.  Friendly service. Sat on a nearby bench to devour them. Very tasty.

8-2-8, Sully – Aug 2024

Caffe Della Citta, Ebbw Vale

Well, that was a new one for me, a café and soft play centre. I was doing a recci for a trip and had been to the museum and archives and come up into the town on the funicular and chanced upon this café.  It served the most enormous custard slices.  May be I should have booked half an hour on the soft play afterwards to work it off.

Caffe Della Citta, Ebbw Vale – Aug 2024

Snack Ranch, Trelewis

I was in the area on another geocaching trip and had worked up an appetite for a bit of lunch.  A breakfast roll at the Snack Ranch filled a gap after which I set off for a lovely walk around the lakes and up as far as the climbing centre.

Snack Ranch, Trelewis – Jul 2024

Hips Harbourside, Lydney

Another lovely summer’s day out geocaching. In the afternoon I parked in Lydney and walked down to Lydney Harbour and treated myself to lunch at smart Hips Harbourside.  The bacon toastie was very good, made the traditional way it seemed by frying.  The meat is supplied by a local master butcher which also explained the high quality.  Also had a slice of carrot cake overlooking the harbour.

Hips Harbourside, Lydney – Jul 2024

Charlotte’s Pantry, Margam Park

A long walk around the grounds of Margam Park on a fine day had left me pretty hungry so I called in at Charlotte’s Pantry and picked up a Vegan Sausage Roll Salad and ate it at one of the tables outside.

Charlotte’s Pantry, Margam Park – Jul 2024

Rising Sun, Woodcroft

When I happen to be out walking on a Monday and I see a pub my first thought is that it will no doubt be closed as is often the case with countryside pubs on Mondays, but not this one.  Not only was it open but it was doing a roaring lunchtime trade.  It was reopened last year after being rescued by the community who seem to be doing a great job. I was tempted by the chip menu but in the end just had a pint of fine Wye Valley Shindig beer.

Rising Sun, Woodcroft – Jul 2024

No Sign Wine Bar, Swansea

The history of the No Sign Wine Bar in Wind Street goes all the way back to 1690 making it easily the oldest pub in Swansea.  The inside seems to stretch back miles but we kept ourselves to the historic front part and enjoyed the Grey Trees Mosaic Pale Ale.

No Sign Wine Bar, Swansea

Queen’s Hotel, Swansea

Tucked away in the back streets of Swansea Marina, the Queen’s Hotel is another gem of a pub said to date from 1892. Stopped off here for lunch after going to the nearby Dylan Thomas museum and before heading up to the market to get some larverbread.  How Swansea is that!  The chips with my steak pie were excellent as was the Mumbles Gold beer.

Queen’s Hotel, Swansea – Jul 2024

Jolly Sailor, Newton, Porthcawl

What a lovely pub, especially on a warm summer afternoon. Said to be Porthcawl’s oldest pub, filled with an eclectic mix of historical items.  The Rev James was very drinkable.

Jolly Sailor, Porthcawl – Jul 2024

Jenkins Bakery, Porthcawl

A day spent exploring the sights of Porthcawl including meeting Lizzy the Lizard, the giant piece of driftwood washed up earlier this year that had become a bit of a celebrity in itself.  I grabbed some lunch, a Tuna Softie and a Caramel Doughnut in Jenkins Bakery on John Street. Jenkins Bakery was established all the way back in 1921 in Llanelli.

Jenkins Bakery, Porthcawl – Jul 2024

Railway Inn, Upper Killay, Swansea

The traditional pub, adjacent of the old Clyne railway, now a cycleway, dates back to 1864. It must be one of the few remaining pubs with an outside toilet. A nostalgic visit.  My friend, the late Rory Gowland, ran the Swansea Brewing Company in the Joiners Arms, Bishopston for many years. He sadly passed on the eve of the new brewery opening here at the Railway a few years ago. Raconteur, musician, brewer and all round good guy, he is sadly missed.

Railway Inn, Swansea – Jun 2024

Fresco Bar, Swansea

I was out doing a recce for a trip I am leading next month to Swansea and this was a most convenient place to stop and have some lunch.  I had the USA Chicken Bacon Wrap and a cappuccino and sat overlooking the harbour whist protecting my food from pigeons and seagulls.

Fresco Bar, Swansea – Jun 2024

Fred’s Hungry Van, Nantgarw

I arrived by train and was visiting the Museum’s National Collections Centre opposite Fred’s wagon so just had time to grab a bit of lunch – a sausage roll and a cup of tea. It was great to have a chat to Fred whilst waiting.

Fred’s Hungry Van, Nantgarw – Jun 2024

Franco’s Aberavon

A meet up with others after we’d picked litter from the Aberavon sand dunes.  My chicken and bacon burger was so late arriving that in the end the charge was waived.

Franco’s, Aberavon – May 2024

Sully Inn, Sully

I had the pleasure of delivering a talk about Captain Scott to a group at the Sully Inn and was treated to a nice plate of fish and chips as part of the deal.

Sully Inn, Sully – May 2024

Ship Inn, Raglan

After exploring the village of Raglan for the first time I was in need of some sustenance and eyed up a couple of choices.  I went to the Ship Inn even though a sign said the lease was up for sale. I don’t know whether the new owner is already there or whether there is a temporary manager but what I can say is the cheese and bacon ciabatta was delicious as was the pint of Wye Valley HPA.

Ship Inn, Raglan – May 2024

Carpenters Arms, Coed-y-paen

I arrived having just had a stressful 90 minutes searching for and eventually retrieving a geocache hidden up a tree.  A good pint of Wye Valley Butty Bach and a roast beef and tomato batch revived me no end. I was kindly allowed to leave my car in the car park whilst I went for a short stroll to retrieve another cache. Nice to see a pub that has recently re-opened.

Carpenters Arms – May 2024

Food 4 u 2 go, Pontypool

I’d been for a walk around the lovely Pontypool Park and then up to Pontnewyndd and back so was starting to feel a bit peckish.  I popped into the market which was very quiet on a Monday but found ‘Food 4 u 2 go’ was open so had a baked potato with cheese and beans.  I used to have this as an evening meal when I was young.  Brought back a lot of memories.

Food 4 u 2 go – May 2024

Market Tavern, Aberdare

I wanted to visit this pub purely for its historical significance.  It’s where the first National Eisteddfod was held in 1861.  It wasn’t meant to be here. It was meant to be in a marquee up near Aberdare Park but that got destroyed in a storm do it moved indoors here to the market hall.  Now it’s a pub, the Market Tavern. I must admit I struggled here.  There were no real ales or Guinness so I had a Sharp’s Atlantic Pale Ale, far too cold for me.  Forgot to look if they did any bottled or canned beers.

Market Tavern, Aberdare – May 2024

Caffi Cwtsh, Dare Country Park

I arrived in Aberdare by train and walked up to Dare Country Park via Monk Street. A series of geocaches took me all the way up to the lake and some lovely views of the hills around.  On the way back I called in the café and had a cheese and tomato panini in the courtyard before heading back into town.

Cafe Cwtsh, Dare Country Park – May 2024

Cambrian Lakeside Cafe Bar, Tonypandy

I arrived by bus at Tonypandy to scout out a walk I’m planning on leading.  I headed up the hill to this café but not by the best route I must admit. I had a tuna mayo panini and coke in this popular café and ate it on the decking overlooking the lake. I then walked up to the top lake alongside the babbling stream.  Very pleasant.

Cambrian Lakeside Cafe Bar – May 2024

Queen’s Head, Chepstow

The Queen’s Head is a real pub beyond question.  It has been CAMRA’s Gwent Pub of the Year since 2013.   I had some lovely JPR Pale Ale from the Grey Trees brewery in Aberdare. Its the only pub I’ve been to where the locals were complaining (jokingly) aobut us drinking the beer – they were concerned it was going to run out soon.

Queen’s Head, Chepstow – May 2024

Cwtch, Chepstow

It was time for a break for me leading a u3a group around Chepstow and seek some sustenance.  We spotted this café tucked away and had some delicious caramel crunch cake and a couple of coffees.  Good friendly service. I was a bit shocked by the bill but I think that’s maybe because I had assumed as it was served from a hatch I was expecting it to be less but can’t complain about the quality.

Cwtch, Chepstow – May 2024

Black Boy, Swansea

I think the Black Boy has been there for years.  I seem to remember going there in the late 1970s when I was in college.  I paid another visit tonight for a friend’s 80th birthday.  I got so caught up in the event that I forgot to take a photo of my fine fish and chips but luckily for me my friend is an avid fish and chip fan and photo taker!

Black Boy, Swansea – May 2024

George Hotel, Chepstow

As I sat there drinking my pint of Wye Valley Butty Bach a kind gentleman gave me a copy of the pub’s history to read.  It goes all the way back to 1620 and the pub’s owner, Margaret Clayton, used to hide the takings in the town gate for safe keeping.

George Hotel, Chepstow – Apr 2024

Parsons Bakery, Chepstow

After my walk around Chepstow, scouting out a walk I was leading soon, I was in need of some sustenance.  The first place that caught my attention was Parsons Bakery.  I had a cheese and onion pasty and a piece of Moon cake.  The pasty was fine but the cake somewhat drier than I had been expecting.

Parsons Bakery, Chepstow – April 2024

Finnegans Inn, Barry Island

Finnegans Inn is next to the railway station on Barry Island. Having taken my Cardiff u3a Slow Train Coming group for a tour of Barry Island and putting them on the train home it was time to unwind by having a Guinness.  And very good it tasted too!

Finnegans Inn, Barry Island – April 2024

Chippy on the Beach, Barry Island

After exploring Friar’s Point it was time for a break before we all headed around Nell’s Point to Jackson’s Bay.  The group broke up and I went to ‘Chippy on the Beach’ for a large sausage and chips and treated myself to some gravy to go with it.

Chippy on the Beach, Barry Island – Apr 2024

Cross Inn, Cwmfelin

I arrived at Garth station by train and walked up to Garth Hill to the east. I’d built up quite a thirst by then so headed for the Cross Inn where I had a warm welcome and two lovely pints of  Cerddin Brewery beer brewed in the micro brewery next door to the pub.

Cross Inn, Cwmfelin – Mar 2024

Thurabread Bakery, Monmouth

I’d spent the day out geocaching, climbing trees (at my age!) and exploring churches.  It was time for a treat and I happened upon the Thurabread Bakery which has been in business for over 100 years!  I had a Danish pastry and a coffee to wash it down.  Perfect.

Thurabread Bakery, Monmouth – Mar 2024

Traditional Bakers, Maesteg

I was busy exploring the valley by train and alighted at Ewenny Road station, did some exploring and walked up to Maesteg and had a quick scamper around the town in search of some lunch.  Lots of cafes but what I wanted was a sandwich to eat on the train home and I found a Coronation chicken on mayonnaise salad in Traditional Bakers. I thought at the time Traditional Bakers was a description of the shop rather than the name but it is cunningly both.

Traditional Bakers, Maesteg – Mar 2024

O’Sheas, Barry Island

I was out doing a recce for a walk I am leading next month.  After arriving by train and taking a stroll around Friars Point I was feeling peckish so called into O’Sheas in the Western Arcade.  Their chips are excellent.  After that I headed on around to Jackson’s Bay.

O’Sheas, Barry Island – Mar 2024

Woodies, Blackwood

I’d had a good walk around Blackwood looking at the artwork including up to the impressive Chartist statue at the north end of the town. I was running out of time on my parking but had time enough to buy a tuna baguette from Woodies café. I must admit I thought they had got my order confused when it arrived as it looked like a pizza box but it was a nice touch as it also contained the salad and coleslaw.

Woodies, Blackwood – Mar 2024

Black Gold, Cheltenham

This was a real treat at the end of a day doing a walk around Cheltenham.  Good coffee and a great peanut butter stack.  Set me up for my walk back to the station and train home.

Black Gold – Feb 2024

Central Cross Cafe, Cheltenham

I’d spent the morning exploring Cheltenham town centre and felt I had enough energy left to walk to Pittville Park.  Suddenly, on the way, I felt hungry.  Luckily I was just passing Central Cross Café.  Their board said they were famous for their hot sandwiches so I had a tomato, mozzarella and pesto hot sandwich and it was indeed tasty.

Central Cross Cafe- Feb 2024

Cafe Cwtch, Pontypridd

Enjoyed my visit to what seems to be a new café in Pontypridd, Café Cwtch in the YMa building on Taff Street.  I had a colourful and tasty avocado breakfast.

Cafe Cwtch – Feb 2024

Crumbs, Merthyr Tydfil

I’d arrived by train and been for a nice walk up to Cyfarthfa Castle and around the woods.  I was heading back and what should I pass but a sandwich shop.  Perfect.  I had a southern fried chicken, cheese and baconnaise sauce hot panini.  I think it was best described as naughty but nice.

Crumbs – Feb 2024

Fagins, Taff’s Well

A local Free House serving a number of real ales and a good menu.  I visited for a geocaching event we were made to feel welcome.  I had a pint of Mosaic Pale Ale from the Grey Trees brewery in Aberdare and a blue cheese burger.  Very nice.

Fagins – Feb 2024

Tuck Shop, Pengam

Arriving by train today, the last of four stations visited, I spotted the Tuck Shop in the distance. Perfect I though, I was getting peckish. I can see why it is called the Tuck Shop as its clientele were the local school boys. My cheese and tuna panini didn’t disappoint. Friendly service.

Tuck Shop, Pengam – Feb 2024

Potters, Newport

Time to unwind a bit after leading a party of 50 around Newport telling them something of the local history. What better than a nice pint of London Pride.

Potters, Newport
Potters – Feb 2024

Coffee#1, Newport

Time for a coffee and a chicken paninni after taking a group around Newport. The tiredness must have got the better of me – I forgot to take a photo of the food. A nicely laid out cafe with friendly service.

Coffee#1, Feb 2024

Sun Valley, Newbridge

After completing a tortuous walk from Crosskeys up to Mynydd y Lan I caught the train one stop north to Newbridge. A sausage sandwich and mug of tea revived me no end.  Friendly service.  The cafe doubles up as the local amusement centre.

Sun Valley – Jan 2024

Golden Lion, Penarth

Hidden away on the back streets of Penarth this is a gem of a pub, winning numerous CAMRA awards over the years. I snuck in there for a cheeky Saturday afternoon drink and had a pint of Into the Valley brewed at the Grey Trees brewery in Aberdare.

Golden Lion – Jan 2024

Castle Inn, Caldicot

Nearing the end of a pleasant cold and sunny circular walk from Caldicot to Rogiet I found this pleasant pub beckoning me in.  I had a pint of Old Speckled Hen and clucked for the rest of the afternoon.

Castle Inn – Jan 2024

Supa Thai Vegan, Newport Market

Newport Market reopened in 2022 after undergoing a massive renovation which I’m guessing some may like and others may not.  At its heart is a large food court with multiple food outlets.  Customers are encouraged to order via a QR code or is you are like me, you look for the outlet that is still willing to accept your order the old fashioned way – verbally, and go with them. I went to Supa Thai Vegan and had a tray of Potato Pops which were 16 fried mini potato balls served with mayo, Thai sriracha, spring onion and crispy onion and were tasty enough.

Supa Thai Vegan – Jan 2024

Brit, Cwmavon

This was a welcome stop on a smashing walk from Pontrhydyfen down to the M4 and back again.  It was a full house here on a Saturday afternoon – sign of a good pub.  I had a very tasty pint of Jemima’s Pitchfork from the Glamorgan Brewing Co.

Brit – Jan 2024

Six Bells, Coity

I was in the area doing some geocaching which included exploring the nearby old road from Coity to Bridgend, now almost totally reclaimed by nature. I thought the Six Bells was closed when I approached but by a stroke of luck it was just opening.  I had a pint of Cwrw Braf from the Tomos Watkin brewery in Swansea.

Six Bells, Coity – Dec 2023

Railway, Penarth

I arrived by train and took a walk down through Alexandra Park to the pier and along the promenade before heading back up through Windsor Gardens and Sully Terrace etc. Before catching the train home I popped into the appropriately named Railway and had a nice pint of Proper Job, Cornish IPA from the St Austell Brewery.

Railway, Penarth – Dec 2023

Great Western Hotel, Abergavenny

Conveniently situated opposite the railway station so anyone arriving early for a train departure can while the time over a pint. Today I had a pint of Glamorgan Brewing Co Thunderbird bitter to round off a very pleasant day in Abergavenny with friends.

Great Western Hotel – Nov 2023

Victoria, Abergavenny

A recently refurbished and now independently-owned pub which traces its history back 200 years. I had a Jackfruit and Mushroom Pie which was jackfruit, portobello mushrooms and sprouting broccoli, topped with panko breadcrumbs and served with mash and onion gravy.  That was accompanied by a pint of Camden Town Brewery Pale Ale.  An interesting feature is the urinals.

Victoria, Abergavenny – Nov 2023

Greyhound Vaults, Abergavenny

Continuing on our tour of hostilities in Abergavenny we dip off the main street and find this little gem. It used to be the tap room for the nearby Greyhound Hotel. A nice pint of Thunderbird from the Glamorgan Brewing Coat Llantrisant was had.

Greyhound Vaults, Abergavenny – Nov 2023

Chesters Wine Merchants, Abergavenny

An unusual place to start a day of sampling beer in Abergavenny but Chesters does indeed serve beer.  Chesters has been in its current location for a couple of years now. It was a pleasure to meet Chester himself and to have a pint of ‘Wanna go to the Sun’ pale ale from Lost and Founded Brewers in Bristol.

Chesters, Abergavenny – Nov 2023

Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar

Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar boasts it is open every day of the year and every time I’ve been its been not only open but busy.  The breakfast roll deal is always a popular choice judging by those people ahead of me in the queue today but this morning I was restrained and just had a sausage bap. It tasted all the better for eating it outside in the miserable November weather at a geocaching event.

Caerphilly Mountain Snackbar - Open every day of the year
Caerphilly Mountain Snackbar – Nov 2023

Amber’s Cafe, Beddau

I’d worked up a bit of an appetite having just delivered a talk at the nearby library about people who had been murdered by poison.  Amber’s Lite Breakfast hit the spot perfectly.

Amber’s Cafe, Beddau – Nov 2023

Flour and Spoon, Leigh-on-Sea

Time for a bit of breakfast before giving a dear old aunt a good send off at a nearby church. I chose the eggs benedict with hollandaise, smoked salmon and paprika. And very tasty it was too. A popular cafe and bakery which also runs a baking school.

Flour and Spoon, Leigh-on-Sea – Oct 2023

KFC, Rochford

It’s over ten years since I’ve had a traditional KFC meal (does anybody still call it Kentucky Fried Chicken?). Ashamed to say I needed a bit of help to negotiate the touch-screen ordering system. I’ll give you a hint – don’t forget to take your receipt – you’ll need it when collecting you food. It was less finger lickin’ good than I remember – but ones taste buds do get less sensitive with age.

KFC, Rochford – Oct 2023

Whitcombe Inn, Aberdare

I was heading back to the station after doing a walk around the town when it suddenly stopped raining. Time for a change of plan. I turned tail and went for a walk up around Aberdare Park instead. On the way to the station, for a second time, I found myself passing the excellent Whitcombe Inn. It would have been rude to walk past. A pint of Wye Valley Talisman beer quenched my thirst.

Whitcombe Inn, Aberdare – Oct 2023

Spires Coffee Shop, Aberdare

Spires Coffee Shop is inside St Elvan’s Church. I was doing a recci ahead of a tour next month. Nice to find there was so much to see in Aberdare and in inside the church itself. Just remembered to take a photo before I ate all my cheese salad roll.

Spires Coffee Shop, Aberdare – Oct 2023

Aldi, Porthmadog

After a morning geocaching around Porthmadog and Tremadog I bought lunch in Aldi. I took it to Minfordd cemetery and ate it with my grandparents who have been dead 60 years. Lovely views from the cemetery towards Cnicht and the granite quarry he used to work. The BLT sandwich and Welshcakes were just the job for the journey home to South Wales.

Aldi, Porthmadog – Oct 2023

The Australia, Porthmadog

What better way to wash down a fine fish and chip supper than with a couple of pints of Purple Moose beer at The Australia. The pub is the brewery tap and had five of their ales on draught. The brewery shop is a few doors down the road and the brewery not far away.

The Creel, Porthmadog

A smashing walk up on Yr Eifl (The Rivals) and Tre’r Ceiri Hill Fort had certainly given me a good appetite. This was a first class fish and chip supper and explains why there were queues of people outside this cafe. The Creel.

Bengal Spice, Caernarfon

After a day’s walking and cheering Wales along on the TV it was time to get some sustenance. WE chose to return to the Bengal Spice, somewhere we visited last year for a special Cobra meeting. It didn’t disappoint. My Tandoori Chicken Bhuna was very tasty.

Fic, Bethesda

Came to Bethesda to do a circular walk up to Moelyci to the west.  The walk took a bit longer than expected and the Wales rugby match in the World Cup Quarter Final was about to start when we arrived back in town so we went into the first place we found to watch the game. So absorbed was I in the game that I forgot to take a picture of my Guinness. A disappointing result in the game against Argentina.

Morrisons, Caernarfon

A good place to pick up some food ahead of a day’s hill walking. The egg and cress sandwiches tasted good after a circular walk up to Moelyci  from Bethesda. The cheese and onion was less tasty on top of Tre’r Ceiri Hill Fort the next day.

Morrisons, Caernarfon – Oct 2023

Tafarn y Porth, Caernarfon

Been coming here for years but I would have struggled to tell you the name of the pub. It is always just Wetherspoons to us. Busy on a Saturday night when there is live international rugby on. Less busy the following morning for breakfast but still popular enough. I must admit Wtherspoon do make a good breakfast.

Tafarn y Porth, Caernarfon – Oct 2023

Black Boy, Caernarfon

It’s become somewhat of a tradition for some of us to visit Caernarfon at this time of year and go to the Black Boy. The steak and ale pie tends to feature highly on our list. Washed down with a nice pint of Porth Neigwl IPA.

Black Boy Inn, Caernarfon – Oct 2023

The Colliers, Efail Fach

After taking a lovely walk up into Pelenna Forest from Tonmawr, I thought I deserved a drink so stopped off in The Colliers in Efail Fach.  The Felinfoel Double Dragon was most refreshing.

The Colliers, Pontrhydyfen – Oct 2023

Queen Victoria Hotel, Blaenavon

After a good morning geocaching at Big Pit Museum and other places in Blaenavon I thought I’d find somewhere to watch the rugby. Wales were playing Georgia in the Rugby World Cup. I spotted a Felinfoel Brewery sign on the Queen Victoria so headed in. No real ale on sale unfortunately and even the Guinness was off. The John Smith’s however was surprisingly refreshing. I thought of the irony that I went all the way to Georgia and found Guinness there in the capital city Tbilisi but lucked out here in Blaenavon.

The Filling Station, Severn Beach

I’d finished my geocaching adventures for the day and was just walking back to Severn Beach and getting hungry when I spotted the Filling Station. It’s got a great proprietor; very friendly and insisted on giving me a complimentary can of coke. Thanks!

Canaletto Ice Cream, Bwlch

The Bwlch is a mountain pass between the Rhondda and Ogmore valleys. On a good day such as today it offers spectacular views. After a 5hr walk I tohught I’d treat myself to an ice cream from the Canaletto Ice Cream van. The van references Alessandro Canale, born in Italy, who along with his wife Maria lived in Cwmparc. Sheep are often seen queuing up for an ice cream – I kid you not.

Canaletto Ice Cream, Bwlch – Sept 2023

Horseshoe Inn, Llangattock

We wanted to sample some Jamaican cuisine was part of my Armchair Travel Challenge and had heard about Jam-Welsh based at the Horseshoe Inn, Llangattock.  We had a lovely Coconut Vegan Curry served in ½ pineapple and a Jamaican Spice Jerk Chicken Breast Burger, served with chilli & mango salsa, chips & coleslaw. I later gifted chef Raymond and Sheila a clock in the shape of Jamaica I had made earlier in the week.

Aberfan Community Centre Cafe

I was doing a recci for a walk I’m leading next month and was beginning to lose all hope of finding somewhere suitable to reccoment to peaple to have lunch when I stumbled upon this smart cafe. I didn’t spot that they served savories till after I’d ordered my coffee and wallnut cake. Never mind, there’s always next month.

Aberfan Community Centre Cafe – Sept 2023

Waves, Fontygary

Waves Café is within the Fontygary Leisure Park and open to the public. We arrived by train, getting off at Rhoose and then walking along the clifftop. I had a ‘functional’ lunch of cheese and potato pasty and doughnut followed by a pint of Guinness from the bar. I liked the way the pasty had a message on it – ‘I’m tidy like a pasty’, A lovely outdoor seating area overlooking the bay.

Waves Café, Fontygary – Sept 2023

Royal Oak, Pencelli

After a very pleasant long day walking in the Brecon Beacons it was time to quench my thirst. What better than a pint of Whistle Blower from Solopian Brewery in Shrewsbury at the canal-side Royal Oak in Pencelli near Brecon.

Royal Oak, Pencelli – Sep 2023

Crown & Sceptre, Ross on Wye

After being greeted by those all too familiar words at the coffee shop nearby ‘sorry, we’re just closing’, I discovered the Crown & Sceptre was more than pleased to have my service. A very pleasant pint of Wye Valley Brewery’s Hopfather revived me after a very strenuous day geocaching on some overgrown trails. An old friend from college ran down to join me in the pub and we spent some quality time catching up and reminiscing.

Bethel Chapel Café, Pontrhydyfen

I had parked near here when setting off for my walk up a nearby hill and spotted this cafe. I was hoping it to still be open when I returned.  I needn’t have worried, it was still doing good business in the afternoon.  Another gem of a place with a warm welcome. I had my bara brith and mug of tea whilst being watched by Richard Burton. After that I went for a walk around the village, over the two viaducts, past Burton’s birthplace and went to see his parent’s grave where he is also remembered.

Bethel Capel Cafe, Pontrhydyfen – Aug 2023

Coffee & Cream, Penrhiwceiber

A trip initially to Fernhill to find a 5* difficulty geocache was made even more difficult when I found the footpath from the station eastwards towards the hospital had been blocked off.  This meant walking back to Mountain Ash and back out again and then back to Mountain Ash afterwards and working up an appetite for some lunch here at Coffee & Cream.  A crispy cheese, ham and onion toasted sandwich went down very well. The café even has a little gift shop.

Coffee & Cream, Penrhiwceiber – Aug 2023

The Nook, Rogerstone

That was a pleasant surprise.  I was taking a walk between Pye Corner and Rogerstone stations when what should I stumble upon but this gem of a place, the Nook. It was busy even in mid-week but with good service and tasty food.  I had a Chorizo Brioche with pickled red cabbage, black garlic mayo and a poached egg.

The Nook, Rogerstone – Aug 2023

Community Shop, Almondsbury

I was just beginning to feel both weary and peckish after a morning walking in the Bradley Stoke and Almondsbury area when what should I find but a community shop staffed by volunteers. Not only that but they had picnic tables outside where I could enjoy my sausage roll and lovely homemade fruit flapjack, washed down with a can of Rio Tropical.

Community Shop, Almondsbury – Aug 2023

Henbury Arms, Bristol

Had a fun day out geocaching in Bristol visiting first the Clifton Suspension bridge and then Blaise Castle and cottages and finally an event in the Henbury Arms. Disappointed to find no hand pumped beer being served so had Guinness instead. The pepperoni pizza when it arrived didn’t look too appetising but was in fact pretty tasty and freshly made. Good service too I thought.

Henbury Arms, Bristol – Aug 2023

Star Inn, Treoes

You know what it’s like.  You park the car and go off in search of a geocache, turn the corner and suddenly, there staring you in the face, is a beautiful thatched pub.  It didn’t disappoint.  A slow-cooked steak sandwich with salad and chips. Very tasty.  Accompanied by a lovely pint of Glamorgan Breweries Co Thunderbird IPA.  Ignore the Brains glass. I must get into photographing the beer pump clips.   And the geocache was still there when I came out to look for it.

Star Inn, Treoes – Aug 2023

Fontygary Shop & Deli – Rhoose

This smart deli opened in 2022 and is part of the Fontygary Leisure Park complex but open to the public.  I was doing a recce walk along the cliff top ahead of brining a group to Rhoose next month. The complex had a bar, café and fish and chip shop but I chose to get a baguette and Welsh cake from the deli and wasn’t disappointed.  I took it down to the beach and ate them in the sunshine with the sound of the waves lapping in.

Fontygary Shop & Deli, Rhoose – Aug 2023

Loaf Kitchen Bar – Ystradgynlais

Weary after a morning’s geocaching in Ystradgynlais I popped into Loaf and had a ham and cheese panini.  Very tasty. It certainly revived me.  They’ve a nice little garden area at the back for when the weather is fine.
