Seeking Sustenance

There’s a tendency once you find somewhere you like to eat to keep going back there rather than try somewhere new. There’s nothing wrong with that of course, but there must be lots of gems out there we just haven’t yet discovered. This little project is an effort find some of those places and savor the experience. We began with Wellfield Road in Roath, Cardiff in March 2023 iand enjoyed the exerience so much we are now branching out.

In 2023 and 2024 I visited over 250 different places. Time to rein back on things I think and loose a few pounds!

Here’s our experiences to date:

Map

Here’s the places visited to date laid out on an interactive Google map.

Wellfield Road

We started the chalenge with our local shopping street, Wellfield Road, which over the years has become increasing populated by eateries. In my youth it was just the Himalaya Indian restaurant, Ferrari’s café and Thayer’s Ice Cream. How different it looks these days. In all we found 33 places to eat on this short road and finished the challenge on October 2023. We’ve been back a few times as new places have opened. I can see this is a never ending project! We’ve visited 37 eateries in total now along Welfield Road. If any more are added we will no doubt return. Here’s how we got on with our Wellfield Road Food Crawl.

Some of the places we ate in the early stages of our Wellfield Road Food Crawl.

Albany Road

After completing Wellfield Road I suppose it was only natural that we progress on to Albany Road. Again, there’s again lots of choice here. We didn’t keep strictly to order but vagurly started on the south side, heading west and then returned along the north side. It was good to discover somepleaces we may not otherwise have found. There were 34 places we visited in Albany Road and a few more have opened since we finished so some revisites required sometime.

Newport Road

There are gererally a different type of eateries along Newport Road; more fast food chains than arty cafes. Sometimes though it is just what I fancy. I chose to tackle the section of Newport Road between Rhymney River bridge and town, starting on the west side. I’d have never thought I would be eating lunch in a bingo hall or a skateboard park when I started this challenge!

Off the Beaten Track

As well as the main roads with lots of eateries in Cardiff there are plenty of places tucked away elsewhere. Here’s the places we have discovered and sampled in a collection I have called Off the Beatern Track.

Beyond the ‘Diff

I soon discovered that there were lots of pleasant places to drink and eat outside Cardiff that I just hadn’t discovered as I always travelled with my cheese and chutney sandwiches and a flask of coffee. Time to branch out a bit. In all I have been to over 100 places to date, saving me making a lot of sandwiches! Here’s some of the gems I have discovered in a group called Beyond the ‘Diff.

Cardiff City Centre

I’m not someone who spends a lot of time shopping but I do go into our lovely city centre sometimes. There’s a large number of places to choose to eat and drink in town and so far I’ve only scratched the surface. Here’s the places I’ve been so far in Cardiff City Centre. .

Cardiff Bay

I do like a trip down the Bay but again I’ve only just started to get a handle on all the places to eat and drink.

Crwys Road

Having finished Wallfield Road, Albany Road and Newport Road I think the next road we will tackle is Crwys Road. Again, lots of variety along here.

City Road

We have started City Road in November 2023 with Shaam Nights. It could take a while!
